I have been a lacrosse coach at St. Augustine Prep for 9 years. I graduated from the school in 2003, where I helped start the program in 2001. The program has blossomed in the last decade thanks to the head coach, JC Valore. I have served as his assistant and defensive coordinator. The relationships that I have built with players, families and coaches have directly impacted my profession as an educator. We hold our team to the highest standards in hopes of giving them the opportunity to participate in college athletics. Furthermore, we instill core values and establish goals for our team. We have yet to achieve our goal, winning a state championship, but we have come very close. This desire to reflect, rebuild and strive for greatness is something that I find so helpful in my classroom as well. Understanding the need of positive reinforcement and student-centered learning opportunities has helped me as a coach and a teacher. I could not imagine myself without lacrosse in my life!
In addition to coaching high school lacrosse in the Spring, I also help orchestrate the running of SouthShore Lacrosse as the Youth Director. I use my experience as an elementary teacher to coach and oversee the youth teams for this club organization. I have worked with SouthShore for 8 years, again with JC Valore. We originally started with one high school team to give our players experience in the offseason in hopes of being recruited by colleges and universities. We now provide opportunities for boys in grades 5th through 11th. The experiences in helping foster the growth of this organization has also assisted in my development as an educator.
